Simon’s Birthday Cake

Simon's 14th bday cakeAt Christmas dinner, Simon drew faces on his placemat. I’d used heavy paper as placemats and put a fresh box of crayons at each person’s place. So when I wondered how to decorate his cake, I made a stencil inspired by his drawing. I got a little carried away with the powdered sugar but everyone recognized the inspiration for the face! See the recipe for this wickedly good and very simple cake.

I made the couscous salad for my family and they loved it! It was very gratifying for me. I realize one of the reasons I like that recipe is that it’s basic with room to adapt, ie use other vegetables, etc. So I get to be creative.
